The H@llow Man

In 2059, a Tunisia governed by biotechnology has made forgetting impossible and feeling illegal. A biochip regulates every citizen’s memory and dampens emotion at the source; hypnosis, the one practice that can loosen the chip’s grip, is banned.

Taha earns his living at the edge of this order. Known as a “blacksmith of pathos,” he forges emotion out of language, writing for others the grief, tenderness or longing they can no longer summon on their own. It is intimate, illicit work, and it isolates him: a disorder of speech keeps Taha at a distance from the very feelings he shapes so fluently for everyone else.

Looking for a way back to himself, he turns in secret to a hypnotherapist. Under hypnosis a forest opens before him and leads to a house without electricity, kept by a silent neighbour. What he finds inside pulls him into a past he was never meant to reach, and toward an unspeakable truth about his own birth.

As Taha crosses that threshold, the film itself begins to come apart. The clean image gives way to the unstable, degraded texture of 1970s video art, as if memory were decaying on tape. It closes on Taha reciting Eliot with a single word displaced — “not with a bang but a whisper” — the sound of an emotion that can no longer be felt, only spoken.
